What to Write in a Christmas Card

Christmas card message examples are below.  Christmas messages come once a year, but you usually have many messages to write in several Christmas cards.  You can use this page to find the Christmas messages you need to wish everyone on your list a merry Christmas.

Sometimes it may be appropriate to use a Christmas quote in your card, while other times you may want to be more personal and mention specific things. Sometimes you will want to write a funny Christmas saying, and other times you will want to sincerely wish someone a merry Christmas.  Use the following Christmas card messages to help you know what to write in your card.  Below are examples of common messages, funny Christmas wishes, and even what to write to your significant other.  Make this a happy and easy holiday card message... at least the writing-in-the-card part.

Example of a Christmas Card Message

Here is an example of a Christmas message that could be accompanied with a family picture Christmas Card.  These are easy to make on your own.  Give your friends and family an update on how everyone is doing.

"Merry Christmas! We are wishing you a great holiday season.  Jack is finished with his first semester of college and we got to meet his new girlfriend Jennifer over Thanksgiving.  Jill is busy playing basketball for the Freshman team at school.  Michael is catching up on some reading over the holidays, and Michelle is enjoying scrap booking."

General Christmas Card Messages

  2. As you become busy with the holiday festivities, take time to enjoy those things that are most important
  3. We want to send you warm wishes and let you know we are thinking of you this Christmas

  10. I’m glad to have people like you in my life to send Christmas cards.  I am truly blessed this Christmas!
  11. This Christmas, have fun doing all the things that you get to do once a year at Christmas time.
  12. I hope your holidays are enjoyable and relaxing.
  13. May you find meaning in all you do to celebrate Christmas this year!
  14. Remember the reason for the season is the reason all the time.  Merry Christmas!

Funny Christmas Messages

It may be the right situation for you to send a funny Christmas card.  In that case you may need a funny message to write.  Here are some funny Christmas card messages.
  1. All I want for Christmas is for you to have a Merry Christmas!
  2. The elves are working overtime to prepare presents for you.  You’ve been extra nice this year.
  3. Christmas only comes once a year, and that's what we are most thankful for at Thanksgiving.  Merry Christmas!
  4. I don't understand why people like to say "Mary Christmas."  Isn't it Jesus' birthday?  We should say, "Jesus Christmas."
  5. Are Christmas trees green?  I mean, are they environmentally friendly like a Hybrid?
  6. The main thing Jesus and Santa have in common is that they both look good in a beard.
  7. The best thing we all teach our kids about Christmas is honesty.  "Sure... there's a real Santa clause."
  8. They keep raising the age requirement to qualify for social security so Santa won't retire.
  9. Everyone knows the most important part of the Christmas celebration is spending time with family you don't get to see very often.  Then you have an excuse to neglect them the rest of the year.
  10. The day you learn that Santa isn't real is the day you question if that Jesus guy is real.
  11. Let's compare Jesus and Santa.  They both know when you're bad or good.  They both give you stuff.  They are both nice.  They can both do miracles.  The are both real... o.k. at least one is real.
  12. I found your Christmas card message on the internet, because I am not creative enough or I don't care about you enough to actually write your Christmas card message.

Christmas Messages to Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Wife, or Husband

_ The following are examples of what to write to your significant other.  If you find that you can't express a Christmas wish to the one you love most, then try these as idea generators and edit these to your taste.
  1. You make me feel like a child waiting to open Christmas presents even when it isn’t Christmas time.  Of course, when it is Christmas time, I feel that way even more.  I just like hanging out with you a lot.
  2. All I want for Christmas this year is your presence. I don't need any presents from you.
  3. Christmas is a great time to spend time with family. Even though you are not technically family, I feel like you are. Merry Christmas.
  4. It's not just the Christmas lights; it's also your smile. My heart feels so much warmth, when you make my Christmas bright.
  5. Knowing that you and I both have Jesus living in our hearts makes the distance between us a little more bearable. That's the true meaning of Christmas for me this year.
  6. I can't think of anyone I would rather spend Christmas with than you. I feel blessed as if I've been given a great present.
  7. Christmas time is a great time to be your boyfriend/girlfriend. I get spoiled by you a lot anyway let alone at Christmas time.
  8. Having you lets me be sure that I won't be lonely or unloved this Christmas, just like having Jesus lets me sure that I'll never be lonely or unloved any other time of year.

Tips for Writing Your Christmas Card Message

Use these Christmas card message tips to help you make your Christmas card extra special.
  1. Write an update on everyone in your family's life for people you don't see often.  They will appreciate getting to know how everyone is doing.  It can be short or long, and your update will likely be read.  Just remember, this will save you from having to call them and tell them all this stuff.
  2. Write something religious for Christians.  This may seem obvious, but you only want to write religious stuff in the Christmas card for Christians, because the "Christ" in "Christmas" stands for "Christ" as in Jesus the Christ.  So, if you are writing a Christmas card for other people, then you can still say Merry Christmas, but they may be put off by your message about Jesus.  Some people may deliberately add something about Jesus for non Christians, if their plan is to evangelize.
  3. Put money in the card.  If you are over 40 and the card is for someone who is under 20, then it is likely you will be expected to put some money in the Christmas card.  Gift cards work also.
  4. Make sure your funny Christmas message is not offensive.  If you write a Christmas card message that makes fun of Santa or Frost the Snowman, then you will be less likely to offend someone than making fun of Jesus.  Be careful to make fun of benign objects or people.
